Looks like ebay scammers may be at it again

Post by mike on Mon 05 Mar 2012, 6:54 am

Copied from uk campsite with the posters permission, this isnt a dandy but the system could be run with anything.

I've noticed as more folding campers come up for sale, that the scammers are back on the go. I usually trawl ebay to see what's on the market and found a 2008 Pathfinder 50 miles away from me. Starting price was £999. Looked at the seller and found they'd just set up the account. Anyway, sent off an email to get more pics as advertised and asked for a viewing. (I'm not really looking for another camper, but if the price is right..........)
I've pasted the reply below and I'll string him along for a while before reporting it to the bay.

Could you please send more pics to dave at #####.co.uk?
Is it possible to view the camper?
Thanks

He doesn't know where I live, so why would it include delivery???
The ad also disappeared.

Hi,
£4000 and you have a deal.
Where's the ebay advert gone?
Regards
MJM

His reply today,
Hi,
I ended the auction. We have a deal for £4000 delivered to your address. To end our transaction I will contact eBay to setup a protected transaction .They will contact you in the next hours , please let me know after you receive the message from them.
Regards

There was another ad from Belfast which included delivery, I asked a few awkward questions and the ad also disappeared.
I'll keep you up to date!!

Next stage

Update for you all, received an invoice from him at 9.31 pm. I wish I could post the image here as it's very authentic!!

Hi,
Did you received the invoice from ebay ?
Let me know
Ian

I've replied

Hi Ian,
Yes, I got the invoice. I don't stay too far away form you, so I could easily come and pick up the camper, it'll save you coming to my house. I will also pay the £4000 in cash, saving you the ebay fees.
All the best, MJM

Let's see what happens now. BTW, I've sent the invoice on to ebay.

Yes not just the Craigslist usual suspects.
I saw an older Conway on eBay in an auction a few weeks ago, that was very suspect.
Don't know what level of proof or suspicion you should have before contacting eBay but I sent a note to the Conway OC.
Others noticed a vendor with two cheap campers last week eBay removed the add.
For those not aware the scam is generally an unusually cheap camper, a distant location and cheap delivery.
I'm not saying that covers all the scams but it is the M O of most of them.
I presume that Mikes source either lives to the far north or this add is the exception that proves the rule.

Latest part of the story

I emailed him offering to pick it up and pay cash (only 50 miles away), his reply below.

Hi,
I am currently away from the area. The camper is already at the local courier and ready for delivery, I need only your name and address to start the delivery. For a fast transaction I will appreciate if you can go to any local Lloyds branch and place the money directly into my bank account,by doing this it will take a few hours to go into my account OR you can send the money online directly into my bank account. log on into your banking account.
Ian

So, to wind him up a little more, I replied as below.

Hi Ian,
What courier are you using because some of them up here will damage > the camper - guaranteed! I'd rather pay cash because the money I've got is iffy (if you know what I mean) It's not counterfeit! I'll chance the bank though. What's your bank account details, I'd rather deal outside ebay.
Thanks,
MJM.

He replied again this afternoon as below.

Hi,
I will use [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] This camper will be delivered professionally. IF FOR ANY REASON YOU ARE NOT SATISFIED WITH THE PURCHASE OF THIS CAMPER YOU MAY RETURN IT WITHIN TEN DAYS OF RECEIVING IT . Please follow the instructions from ebay and make the payment by bank transfer. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO. Ian

My reply 2 minutes ago below

Hi Ian,
I'm sorry, I deleted the eBay instructions hoping you would take the cash.
Please send your bank details again.
Thanks,
MJM

I'll keep you all updated.

To me the warning is when something like a folding camper is sold with delivery for say £100 often but not always in a difficult to get to place where £100 delivery may seam like another bargain,on the same thread they are talking about another one where collection hasn't been mentioned just delivery, one sellers ip has been traced to the USA

I've just read it and it's awful and shows how easy it is to be duped but then when I was going to purchase nothing for a pound remembered that the best scams can sometimes be the ones for tiny amounts that add up. On this occasion I'm willing to purchase.

i started to pay the pound and then wondered if i was being duped.

i can understand that someone has been scammed as that is how they do it

thank goodness i believe in Karma as it stops me being angry at people who do this sort of thing and i just wait for the payback for them

Looking at the profile of the person selling nothing for a pound convinced me it's genuine. I paid a pound and at the end of the day if I was scammed Karma will pay them back and if not I did a nice thing and helped someone regain a bit of faith in human nature.
