240v triple socket hookup cable - Halfords

Post by mishabgt on Wed 13 Mar 2013, 7:29 pm

Not sure if this is a bargain as such, but it's the cheapest I've seen a new one - £35.99 at Halfords. all the other camping type places near us are asking around £60!

This one? [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Well it's twenty metres the recommendation for caravan/FC leads is 25m. God only knows what cross section of cable. For 16amp you're supposed to have 2.5mm2 but then again what cross section are most of these units? The real fear with frankly crappy 3rd world components is the reliability of the RCD. Do test your RCD frequently!
You can tell the depth of Hafords tech reply [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
If you want to scare yourself you can read horror tales of counterfeit components throughout the electrical supply industry. So what makes one better than another?
This is much the same.

This one must be better it quotes British standards
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Except those two standards relate to the cable and the "Commando" connector hopefully all the units comply to these.

I use one of these type units but must wire my Dandy at some point. They are what they are and it's hard for the consumer to tell the difference. cable thickness is probably the best sign of quality but they are all supplied to a price point.

I will confess to a weariness over Halfords. I have a trade card and still despise shopping there. A bulb went last month and I had the wrong spare in my car glovebox a 21/5w bulb what I needed was separate 21w and 5w bulbs. Packs of 2 are £3 each I paid less than £1.50 for 4 packs that is £11.80 or £11.96 retail. It doesn't mean that there can't be a bargain at Halfords but there is usually a better option. Alas I get nowt off on camping stuff.

Don't ask me why but the regs say cable must be 25m long + or - 2m i.e. 23 to 27 m long.

Reg 721.55.2.6 (ii).

All I can think is it's to try and avoid people using two short extension leads with the very real risk of crossed connections.

Live Neutral cross will still work. Neutral earth cross will still work. Put them together and you have a live earth cross making the metalwork of the appliance etc live. Ouch!

I imagine that regulations may differ with extension cables rather than a hook up cable.

What is Reg 721.55.2.6 (ii). Is it part of 16th or 17th edition?

To extend this. I believe "Arctic" cable is unsuitable for low temp 240v use but BS 7919 HO7 RN-F isn't suitable to be laid at beneath -5.

So what do we use that covers low temp use? See the post by Chris Dooley in this: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Anyone want to run with this?

When your orange PVC cable fails due to the cold will the walls of your Dandy crack up too?

This is the IEE 17th edition reg number.

This is what is specified in IEE regs and goes down to -25C

I hadn't realised the Regulations had developed so much in relation to caravan installations. It was 15th edition when I needed to know such things.

I must get hold of a copy for bedtime reading study Smile
