Feeling all nostalgic

Post by Helen on Sat 06 Apr 2013, 8:28 pm

I've just had some sweets that I've not had for a long long time and it made me think of all the other stuff that used to be in most sweet shops. The ones I had today were Parma Violets and I sucked them until a little hole appeared in the middle lol!

Now I want some space ships or were they called flying saucers ?

I know what you mean. I like aniseed balls and whatever is the bit in the middle. I found some of these at a garage last year but haven't found any since No I have made the same packet last by only having one every week coming home from work, can you have withdrawal symptoms from aniseed?

I'm not a big sweet fan but a friend has a weakness for sweets especially coltsfoot rock the producer of that is Stockley's of Blackburn.

I'm wondering is sweet production a northern thing or is it the varieties I know come from the north?

I know Lion Sweets of Cleckheaton best of all

Thank you, yes an order is on its way. I can maybe do two a day for a while. I'm a bit disappointed that no one suggested Pernod as an alternative to aniseed. Mind you I haven't had that for about twenty odd years.
Most of the sweets I don't recognise by their names, but what is coltsfoot rock?
I do remember the bubble gum though.
We used to have Blackjack bars, which I think were toffee and liquorice, and black teeth and tongue.

Coltsfoot Rock Sticks - hard sticks of brittle rock flavoured with Coltsfoot (a plant with hoof shaped leaves) People used to dry and smoke the leaves to relieve asthma and the juice was used as a cough cure. The taste is strangely addictive!

The aniseed balls have arrived. bounce A big bag and a free lollipop too. Now I can have one on the way to work and back. Our bubble gums were shaped like golfballs and hard so we used to break them into little pieces to make them last or to share them. We were horrible children Surprised Embarassed

Looking forward to the long hot summer. Does anyone remember Jubbly?
I can only find one photo on the web.

It says drink on the side but I remember them frozen.
The pack is a tetrahedron and was the first product of the worlds biggest food packaging company Tetra Pak.
