treating exterior plywood floor

Post by fearful wizard on Sun 11 May 2014, 11:24 am

Hi, My knee went through the bed base of my combi camp the other day (found out it was rotten) so replacing the whole base.
I have bought some 9mm exterior ply and i want to treat it before replacing it, any suggestions please.
The original base was chipboard thanks. Pete Smile

Ply will be stronger than chipboard anyway.
If its exterior grade and not going to be exposed to the elements we think you would be OK with a coat of paint or stain it and vanish it.
We just stained the bed bases in Dylan when we replaced them.

I'd also go for ply coated on the underside with yacht varnish and the other side use a suitable stain/preservative.  Smile

Chipboard or OSB board?

Doubt chipboard would last the year out. Always surprised considering the quality Dandys also used  OSB board. Any good exterior ply if edge sealed should be good for years.

Might seem a bit yeuch as reasoning goes but bed bases are not generally designed to withstand the impact of weather.

Even in a Dandy, any type, neither the bed base exterior, nor interior could be reasonably supposed to have been susceptible to weather damage.

All adhesives are prone to fail, so the surfaces they were designed to bond to, the bonding environment and the usage of the bonded material are critical issues to consider.

My guess would be, someone pee'd on it before your knee went through it lol

I must learn to read. Bed bases not bases as in floor.
Normally ply as both strength and light weght needed.
I've seen some bed bases left unfinished and some varnished.
Were they produced unfinished as standard or does it depend on what was produced that week?
Does a finish affect underbed condensation?

It looks like chipboard with very smooth surface, it must have had some protection on it to last 30yrs (its a mid 80s combi camp)
I am now replacing it with 9mm exterior ply.
I have put two coats of wood preservative and two coats of yacht varnish on the base, and i will put wood preservative on the top as Helen suggested (thanks Helen).
Going to use some seamseal cv bedding mastic when i pop rivet it back on the frame. Pete.
