The Willows, Tewkesbury - 1 to avoid!

Post by The Admiral on Mon 11 Jul 2011, 6:25 pm

Just come back from a long weekend at this site which we were using as a base whilst we were participating in the Medieval Festival. This is a new site and the touring section only opened in June, but I have to say it is definitely one to avoid.
We arrived on Friday to discover that there was a rally for approx 400 bikers being held on the pub campsite next door! The pub apparently holds regular rallies and this one has been running for years, but did the site bother to mention it when we booked - no they didn't.
We had a hells game actually trying to find the site as there is no signage and when we did find it, we had to wait for about 20 minutes until the rally organisers had checked in 20+ bikers, before they would let us through their barrier so we could actually get to our campsite. The music from the rally was so loud it was making things in Minnie shake and it continued at full blast until 1:30am on both Saturday and Sunday mornings - we consequently had very little sleep.
Now on to the site itself, the grass is now growing, but contains an awful lot of thistles and even though we were on hard standing we both got covered in mud putting Minnie up in the rain!
The facilities block is way to small for the size of the site with only 1 shower in both ladies and gents which cost £1 to use! No seat or anything in the shower just 1 hook and a ring for your towel. In the ladies there was also two privacy cubicles (only 1for the gentlemen) and 2 toilets again not enough for the number of people staying this weekend. As far as I am aware the toilets were only cleaned this morning after everyone else but us had left, again not good enough. Only one standard size bin for rubbish as well when we arrived (although a second one did appear over the weekend, they were both overflowing by the time we left).
The hot water in the toilets was so hot, it was impossible to use it (no warning signs either) and the smell from the cess pit was horrible particularly yesterday when the wind had changed and was blowing in our direction.
Needless to say we will not be returning and I advise everyone else to steer clear as well!

its such a shame when sites are this poor it ruins peoples weekends and holidays it really annoys me as simple things like emptying bins and cleaning toilets and showers are not particularly difficult tasks and need to be done regularly especially if those facilities are over subscribed,
thanks for the review jayne i will be certain never to stay there affraid

What a let down Jane, but thanks for giving us the low down, just hope you enjoyed your time at the festival to compensate for the camp-site.

so awful that this happened Sad

must admit my idea of camping is quiet rather than big groups with noise til the early hours and you'd expect much better facilities at a new site

Yes we did thanks Mike we had 2 very good battles and the people watching seemed to really enoy it as well, it was such a shame that the campsite was so poor as it is in a nice location and does have potential. But unless the pub landlord stops being such an a"£*e and the facilities improve I can't see it staying open very long.

You should have stuck the pub landlord in the middle of your fiercest battle affraid

This is one that doesn't deserve a place on our Dandy Campers campsite review map Evil or Very Mad and will not be added

Sorry it wasn't good Jayne. Sad

the site review brings back the nightmare memories of camping at a music festival, still i learned one thing that's if i ever wish to put myself through the filth that is a muddy music festival again we will camp at nice site away from the festival.
