Alloy Wheels

Post by Nick on Mon 11 Jul 2011, 4:15 pm

we are considering changing our standard tired looking trailer wheels for 12inch Minilite alloys.I know of another Designer that has changed the wheels with success, but as all Dandy's vary including wheel wells,i need to work out how much offset i can get away with 1st.

You do realise that if Vicki has them on her Dandy I will want them on mine too bounce

We did consider this a while ago but due to ours only being 10 inch wheels we decided not to bother but when we do the suspension it would be worth looking at again.

Dear All

I knew this had been discussed before and was going to send the the link as a PM to someone as it is on the site to which some may not travel.
Then I saw the contributor was Hooker128 so I figured it's OK to repeat his link.

i think the factory wheels fitted to a Dandy are regular trailer wheels with a Zero offset and it would appear that most mini wheels have a offset of 35mm,this may bring the tyre too close to the inside of the wheel arch?Spacers are out of the question as there is not enough length on the studs so it might be a none starter.

Go to the nice man who will be fitting the very expensive rubber to your new hoops, show him your present wheels and he will tell you the offsets. He may if you have the dandy in tow even offer an opinion on going to 12".
Conversely get your spare wheel a piece of wood and a ruler.
Place the piece of wood across the diameter of the wheel. Place the edge of the rule on part of the rim that will be hard up against the hub and measure from metal to edge of wood. Turn tyre over do similar avoiding any risen edges.
Subtract one from other. If their the same no offset. If they differ by 1/8" or 3mm your crap at measuring. If it's a substantial amount read the above guide and you then know how to express the offset be it +ve or -ve. Just re read this when looking for a post in relation to wheels. If you subtract one measurement from the other what you have is twice the offset. i.e. 4 inch rim with 1 inch offset. one measurement is 3 inch and the other measurement is 1 inch. So the difference is 2 inch but that is twice the offset.

Kevin.

Was it your good self who put an additional spar and 750Kg suspension units in?

Kevin.

P.S. Nice machine porn from your parents former business.

Kevin,
it was not me,i have mere 500kg suspension units fitted.I cannot see why for the sake of £10 on a Dandy costing over £7000 new Riva did not just fit 750kg units.I would imagine my Units are supporting 500kg so they are running at the high end of their limit.
Thanks for your tip regarding measuring the offset,i might do that but its easier just to remove a wheel off the hub than busting a blood vessel struggling under the trailer to get the spare off.I have removed the spare before what a pain that is to refit.
cheers

Nick

If I were bothered about what my Dandy weighed I'd nip to a local weighbridge.
I wouldn't fuss unnecessarily about the clearance of the tyre. While looking at 5's I got drawn into this.
After possibly taking too much notice of the piece on ride heights featured in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I spoke to both Indespension and Ian. Yes the heights referred to are quoted by Dandy.
Yet Indespension stressed the relatively small degree of movement, and Ian would have no worries with a couple of inches of clearance.
Mind you I suppose I would be bothered if I was thinking of fitting 12" wheels.
Were they on offer cheap? Looking at Alloy Wheels 10" on ebay I found 1/2 doz sets on first page.
This person selling three of the sets! [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

looking at how the Indespenion units are constructed,i don't see how the wheels would move up and down at all,i suppose the idea is that the rubber absorbs shocks from potholes etc.I have plenty of clearance above the wheel as it is,i believe a 12inch wheel/tyre increases the dia by approx 3/4inch so that should increase ride height a little bit.

wheel studs and wheels

Post by Billy on Tue 12 Jul 2011, 10:18 pm

So, classic mini wheels fit the Dandies?
Are the studs easy to change on Dandy hubs?

Billy i was thinking the same, were you thinking of changing the studs for longer ones so you can space the wheels off?If the studs can be tapped out i wonder if mini ones would fit or if they are already mini studs anyway.

Hi Nick, As you know I am Dandyless at the moment,I was wondering if they me be Mini hubs.

I have a pair of Mini alloys I bought to make a teardrop but the idea was binned in favour of a Dandy, yes you are correct I was thinking of spacing out the wheels and fitting a nice pair of stainless mud guards.

Its nice getting to know these Dandy s.

Billy i know alloys have been fitted on both external and internal wheel arches types, but i have not heard of anyone spacing the wheels off,so i am wondering if there is already enough clearance.I suppose you have the advantage that when you get yourself a Dandy you can try the wheels before you have to go through the effort of spacing the wheels. The PCD is same as classic mini but the hubs and brake assemblies are not the same as a mini's.

Had a look today and there is a positive offset on the standard dandy wheels,so i might take punt on 12inch minilites,if i have any issues i can always sell them on Smile

Hi Nick, You should be able to pick up a set of Minilites cheap....Ebay or Gumtree???

12" wheels will lift your ride height a little too and help with tyre wear.

They also look good. Billy.

thanks Billy,i am bidding on a set of 4 white minilites,if i have any prob's with fitment i will just sell them on.I believe 12s lift the chassis about half an inch which should bring trailer near level.I will let you know how i get on,and post pics should i win them.

alloy wheels

Post by John on Wed 20 Jul 2011, 8:58 pm

There is more to this, standard mini wheels fitted to the old dandy where 10inch x 3.5 wide most alloys are 5.0 wide, some are 4.5 look at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] I fitted BWA 5X12 MINI WHEELS with an offset of 35 mm standard mini wheels are 24 mm offset, you will have to do the sums with increased width and increased offset
